RSHE / PSHE
What will we give our children through well-planned PSHE / RSHE?
When children leave Jacksdale Primary and Nursery School, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society, being the very best that they can be!
We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves, and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it.
The bigger picture - school and beyond...
In an ever– changing world, it is important that our children are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being. Our PSHE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.
Bringing our values and those of others to the wider world with our children
Our curriculum is supported by the PSHE Association. This is a National Body providing staff training, resources and support to schools to deliver high quality PSHE lessons. This part of the curriculum is integral to the values and ethos of the school. At Jacksdale we are supporting every child to develop in this area by providing a progressive and thematic approach across the school.
- In the Autumn Term children in KS1 and KS2 delve in to the PSHE and RSHE themes of 'Healthy Relationships'.
- In the Spring Term this is followed by - 'Living in the Wider World'
- In the Summer Term all children across KS1 and KS2 explore - 'Health and Well-being'
The whole of the RSHE curriculum is woven through every aspect of our daily school life and often there are incidental opportunities to address areas of the curriculum outside the planned curriculum.
What, how and when do we teach the RSHE curriculum?
EYFS -
In the Foundation Stage, PSHE and citizenship is taught as an integral part of topic work and is embedded throughout the curriculum. The objectives taught are the Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) statements from ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ and the PSED Early Learning Goals.
Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 -
At Key Stage 1 and 2, PSHE is taught through a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. We ensure we cover the Health and Well-Being, Relationships and Living in the Wider World Learning Opportunities set out in the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study, which comprehensively cover the statutory Health Education and Relationships Education guidance. Pupils are taught PSHE using You, Me and PSHE - A scheme of work for primary school Years 1 – 6.’
This is supplemented with ‘Health and Relationship’ content from ‘Discovery Education’. This is an online resource that provides relevant and engaging resources to cover all aspects of health and relationships education within PSHE.
In our school there is a strong emphasis on emotional Literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. Our continual work on ‘Growth Mindset’ encourages children to recognise and build their own resilience. Breathing exercises and mindfulness activities are part of weekly routines in each class, together with active breaks. All of these activities are provided and encouraged to help children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration, physical activity and focus.
In addition to Relationships Education, we also teach aspects of Sex Education that is covered in our Science Curriculum. Alongside this we teach about different kinds of relationships, including same sex relationships, and gender identity because it is important that our children should have an understanding of the full diversity of the world they live in and be prepared for life in modern Britain. The children know that this is referred to as ONE LOVE.
Parent involvement in the JPS PSHE and RSHE curriculum
Below you will find some of the sample lesson resources used to deliver our RSHE and PSHE curriculum, as well as a recommended reading list to support parents and carers in talking to children about some of the learning delivered in school.
Having consulted with parents, carers, governors and staff when we initially redrafted our curriculum, it is heartening to see the parental responses to some of our later consultations.
If you would like any further information or have any queries about the RSHE / PSHE curriculum and its delivery, please contact Mrs March via the the school office, who will be very happy to talk to families and offer support.
